Chair-ish
Installation. Vintage found chairs, Apple Red paint.
Variety sizes, 11 ft. diameter circle

In our divided political landscape I, as an artist want to shed light on a global issue of war that causes human displacement, chaos and suffering around the globe. Chairs have been an integral part of human culture and art for centuries. A cherished piece of furniture that historically is associated with power, prestige and authority, but also with rest. In my installation it takes a center stage, inviting conversation. Eleven chairs that were collected from various locations in New England are facing each other in the style of a round table. Set in urban spaces and parks they are a call to gather for peace talks and discussion on what concerns our communities. Symbolic color of red brings the urgency and attention to our need for a dialogue in person. Even though they are all different in style with different personal histories, like us humans, they are now united by importance of the moment.

Ode to the chair
by Pablo Neruda | Transl. Margaret Sayers Peden

bring me a chair
in the midst of thunder
a chair for me
and for everyone
not only
to relieve
an exhausted body
but for every purpose
and for every person
for squandered
strength
and for meditation
war is as vast as the shadowy jungle
a single chair
is the first sign
of peace
